It appears that Mr. Trump's tweet from yesterday was no joke.
He wrote as soon as he found out about the secret meeting the EU Member states held and disccused defense system in Europe.
Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing all American troops from their positions in European countries party to the NATO treaty, effective at once. Reportedly, his advisers attempted to dissuade him, but he remained firmly unhinged. The response from the Democrats side was swift, and branded Trump's move as an overreaction, and they have been joined by many voices on the Republican side. Experts have expressed doubts over the authenticity of the wikileak that was the basis of Trumps reaction.
The US President clearly stated that 'there will be consequences', but nobody expected this to escalate on such scale. It is undeniable that the US invests more money in defense than Europe. Therefore, American troops are vital for safekeeping. This act out of spite will endanger safety in Europe.
Moreover, this does not contribute to the relationship between Europe and the US. Things are heating up and the future does not look bright at the moment.
Trump has been unhappy for a while with EU's commitment to NATO and has not held back in expressing his views about it. Recalling Trump's words from last week's visit to the UK: „The US can defend itself, can you?“, aimed at Europe's NATO's allies. This withdrawal of troops is seemingly the sign that his threats have not been hollow. It is unclear what the European states will make of this decision, as many of them have already denied the authenticity of the leak that was the catalyst for the Trump's move.
This news will be particularly concerning for the states in fear of Russia's more assertive European policy.
