Is Slovenia in Central Europe and mysterious Iran
The second day of the Salient Conference 2019 and the first day of simulations the UN Security Council started with the mock session on the topic: Is Slovenia in Central Europe? Most of the delegates agreed that Slovenia is a Central European country, except for the Russian Federation which considers Slovenia as an Eastern European country and as a Balkan country. The United States of America tried to keep the balance between all the countries, mentioning that everyone has the right to feel as they wish. The first session in UN Security Council where delegates discussed the topic of Iran and the Middle Eastern Power Play has started without the delegation of Iran. In their opening speeches delegates focused mostly on preservation of the Deal, negotiations and cooperation, international security and peace and reposition of European attitude due to its own interests. The first session become extremely interesting due to statements of delegations, which were worried because of the steps taken by the USA. The delegation of the Russian Federation has accused the USA of talking about peace, security and democracy, but not actually following those values. Unmoderated caucus in purpose of negotiations did not pass, because China Vetoed it. The next unmoderated caucus saw some interesting results: the USA and the Russian Federation in negotiations, China not wanting to cooperate with others and EU countries having their own strategy. After the unmoderated caucus, the USA once again called for negotiations. Amending the current Deal or make a new one was also one the topics that were discussed. The sanctions by the USA on Iran were also mentioned, as well as it was wondered if that is the right way to a solution. Especially interactive debate was about Iranian involvement in support of terrorist organizations because it touched the issue of international security. The delegations of Germany, Kuwait and partly France agreed that there were no clear evidences that Iran is involved, although they are interested in mechanisms to prove it in the future. Still, until it is proven, most of the countries will continue to do business with Iran. On the other hand, the USA stated that economic sanctions are a mean of pressure and that they would continue with them until all the problems, allegedly caused by Iran, would be resolved, thus that the diplomatic efforts will not be efficient enough. The crisis was caused by breaking news! Saudi Arabia experienced a drone attack on one of their oil stations supposedly planned by Houthi rebels backed up by Iran. Aftr the storm has passed, there was another unmoderated caucus, which brought the issue of two blocks. The delegations of South Africa, the United Kingdom and France were discussing the possible Middle East strategic alliance. On the other side the delegations of the Russian Federation, China and Germany were discussing their own possible solutions.
Today the delegates have talked a lot about trust. The delegation of The United Kingdom has not lost faith in peace: “It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” (Eleanor Roosevelt). But the delegation of China has lost trust in USA and in the possible solution for the Iranian problems and problems of international security. Nevertheless, Germany still believes that the USA can cooperate with the other countries to find constructive solutions. It is up to the delegates to come up with the constructive solution in the following sessions!
