BREAKING NEWS! Explosion at the Iranian utility Isfahan Nuclear Technology Centre
The NSA received breaking news from BBC News!
An explosion occurred at the Iranian utility Isfahan Nuclear Technology Centre in the morning hours of Friday 17th May.
At least 200 people are dead and 800 heavily injured. The entire facility and the surrounding areas are being evacuated. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) refused to comment on the current situation.
Videos posted on social media showed extensive fires and smoke billowing out of the No. 3 reactor at the Isfahan Nuclear Technology Centre.
The IAEA recorded a large increase in radiation and radioactive debris following the explosion. ‘It’s too soon to speculate, but it doesn’t look like a civilian accident’ a spokesperson for the agency said.
Established in the mid-1970s, with help from France, to provide training, technical and scientific support, Isfahan has been suspected to be the primary location of Iran's nuclear weapons programme.
The facility operates four small reactors, all supplied by China.
In addition to the uranium conversion plant, the city is also reportedly the site of Iran's largest missile assembly and production plant, built with North Korean assistance.
