NATO: Consensus or veto?
The writing of the document was the first thing the delegates of NATO Council thought about this morning. They had a few productive unmoderated caucuses and discussed the content of the possible document. After a while, the Council moved back to a moderated debate on the topic of social media threats and crisis. When the delegation of Russia arrived, they had a Q&A session trying to solve their dilemmas about Russia’s actions. Some of the delegates were skeptical about Russia’s answers but most of them agreed that inviting Russia for consultation wouldn`t be a harmful thing to do.
After lunch the delegates again worked extensively on the possible document. There were a few interruptions by the Crisis team which brought the attention of the Council to the new posts and happenings in the Gopnik case. The situation was close to escalation. Furthermore, some delegates dived deep into a discussion about minority rights not just in the Baltic states, but in general. This brought dissatisfaction to other delegates who were questioning the productiveness of the Council. Dissatisfaction was also expressed with threats for vetoing the document in case some clauses are not changed or removed. What will be the faith of the document remains to be seen tomorrow. Either consensus or veto. The delegates have no other choice.
