EU-FAC Denmark-Germany joint press statement
The sessions of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union took place in Ljubljana from 10th to 13th July 2017. The sessions were chaired by Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the Commission.
The sessions confirmed the rising importance of tackling the issue of transnational regulation of Private Security and Military Companies. During the sessions a conclusion was proposed and is still in the voting procedure. Denmark and Germany are both advocates of the conclusion as it is introducing an extensive and comprehensive regulation of the domain.
During the sessions we have observed press articles of happenings in the international arena.
We were familiarised with the presence of German mercenary Asgaard in Somalia. The German representative was vocally reminding the council of the importance of a coherent, comprehensive and transparent regulation on a EU level, which would prevent the unwanted and uncoordinated actions of a non-state actors.
Both delegations were extremely upset by the crisis happening in Libya and saddened by the kidnapping of Ula Wallström. The German delegation expressed sympathy to the Swedish Foreign Minister, even though he was absent during the official session at that time. The German represntative continued reminding the Council of the importance of setting up a trans-european regulation.
Even though the crisis was not thoroughly addressed and discussed in the Council, the Danish and German delegations remain vigilant of the crisis and have concluded to further explore the situation and take adequate measures to prevent further escalation of the events in the Libya region.
